Hi - Newbie here. This site is fantastic!

I'm looking to make pellets from old pasture mowings - goldenrod, horseweed, hay, etc. - dried of course. I saw an earlier post about veggie oil being good for a binder - how about used veggie oil from our local fast food joint? Free, just have to fight the biodeisel folks for it..:-) What's the ratio - ballpark?

Thanks again, Brian, everyone - you all rock!

  3. Hi Kay,
Some would say we all have rocks in our head since making pellets can consume your thoughts, it has mine for 3 years now. Anyway to answer your question You can use our binder as well as used veggie oil to make pellets, the difference of course is ease of storage. You should experiment to see what works best for you and the biomass you use to make pellets. Contact Jef at jeff.ide@makeyourownpellets.com if you want to try the binder.

    Have fun! Admin

    Hi all,

Does anyone know where I can get a few pounds of pellets made? I live in Broad Brook, CT, and we have a ton of giant reed here. I was wondering how ashy this type of grass would be - very hard, dense, up to 2" thick, not like hay. It would be nice to try phrag pellets out without buying a $2000 machine, and find out it sucks.

And for the folks burning leaves, were those pellets burned in a regular pellet stove or a multi-fuels one? Did you have an ash problem?

We were completely missed by the last 2 "mega" snowstorms, probably 1.5" total. My kids were bummed - they wanted to go sledding. I've got daffodils up and my maples are already budding out.

    Thanks guys.
