Hi everyone I am new here and quite interested in making pellets from grass clippings. I am a groundskeeper on a 125 acre proprety ,and mow about 20 acres a week of grass .I will be purchasing a lawn vacuum to pick it all up once it is dry enough. I also have a friend that has a furniture factory so I can get all the sawdust that I want. from what I have read so far a mixture of 75% grass and 25% sawdust would make a nice pellet. Am I wright any info on this would be great before I go and purchase a pellet mill and lawn vacuum.

Thank you and Happy New Year to everyone

Hey Nick, sounds like you found a gold mine....The mix ratio will depend a lot on how dry your grass is. You may even make all grass pellets. Your ash content will be rather high but ,....so what? How many minerals are in the grass may determine how big and hard the clinkers are that may form from burning the grass. Won't know till you try!!! One of my pellet stoves has an agitator that keeps stirring the pellets as they burn and some grass mixed pellets I've made form little "rocks" that make a little racket after a while and I have to clean them out. My other stove just pushes pellets up into the burn pot and the grass mix pellets (with high mineral content) make a bowl shaped clinker that within an 8 hour burn will sometimes make the stove go out. If I'm on top of things i will some times scoop this lump out quickly with a spatula (metal one of course) and shut the door and let her burn. Good luck!

    Thank you wayne.
I read somewhere that if you add sawdust to the grass it shouldnt make clinkers , and the ash is good for the garden . By the way I have a LDJ A-Maize-Ing Heat furnace . I am curently burning corn ,wood pellets up here are 6.50$ a bag . The corn makes a lot of clinkers when the furnace is on idle . Hopefully by next year I can heat for free.

Nick, nothing is free... but you can save a lot of money by buying a unit from these guys (Make Your Own) I bought mine from P.P. and spent over double what I needed to. They (PP ) are a rip off in my opinion. They (PP) also didn't warranty my clutch, and they say all parts are warranteed....yeah right. Brian (the Administrator of this site and owner /operator) has done more for me than Pellet Pros ever tried and Brian never made a cent off of me. What is your location any way? I am near the Canada border here in freezing N.Y.

I live in knowlton QC just above Vt actually 20 minutes from Richford VT. I went to Brians last year to see the pellet mills and was very impressed with these mills. I am just trying to figure out wich mill to buy , I dont have a lot of extra time in the summer to make my pellets so I need a unit that can make what I need in a little time .I know that I will need minimum 7 tons of pellets, so it will take time every week to make that amount ,but dont really want to spend every weekend to make them. I assume the ss200a would be sufficent for what I need . I just wonder how many grass pellets I can make with it an hour. I would rather purchase it from Brian because I know that he will help me with everything. And everyone here will too. Where are you in N.Y.?

It would be easier to buy if there was a way for me to finance it but being Canadian I`m not sure I can. I am not working for the next 2 months so I have no income ,so I will have to wait until march when money starts flowing again. Heating my house right now is not cheap. I should have bought one last year and made pellets for this winter ,but didn't everything was new to me didnt want to make any mistake. I can see you guys really want me to buy from Brian and its a no brainner.(he as parts and knowledge and is a nice guy) If everything goes acordingly I will.
