My brother and I have been making pellets or at least trying to make pellets for about 2 years. Our present method is useing corn stover. We are using a Pellt Pro mill. It has been a real learning experience. Our problem now is getting the pellet weight or density up. Our pellets weigh about 25lbs/cuft. The best we ever have gotten is 30lbs/cuft. Reading the comments in this forum have given me some more things to try. One thing that we are doing that may help someone is we are using steam. We have 2 wallpaper steamers. the nossels are mounted and blast down twards the die. This helps get everything hot asnd adds a little moisture to the mix.
jwk_pel, where are you from? what is your starting moisture?
I'm in Ohio. We have been running 15-25% moisture going in. The last that we ran was 15-18%, but the weight density was still low at 25lb/cuft. We dry the finished pellets to below 10% before storage. Our mix was 100% corn stover, no additives other than steam. This run was about 200 lbs. or a little less.
I just read an artical stating the main difference between animal feed pellet mills and bio-mass fuel pellet mills is their rotation speed.
Can any one varify that this is true?
If it is I would like to lower the RPM's on my mill.
I checked with my dealer, but they say I need to buy a different mill. I think that if slowing my mill down would increase the weight-density then a couple of pulleys and belts would be much cheaper than a new mill.
Looking for any ideas
